Overview: 

On July 18th, 2017 the Access 4 Learning Community (henceforth “A4L”) Association Board of Directors elected to ensure that the contents, associated artifacts and  schemas representing the SIF specification should be open and available to all and protected under global standard licensing agreements. 

All human-readable artifacts published and created by the Access 4 Learning Community are protected under a Creative Commons license. 

All machine-readable artifacts and content is protected under an Apache 2 license.  

All published artifacts and Specifications published after July 18, 2017 are covered.

Human-readable artifacts

The SIF Implementation Specifications and all human-readable related artifacts and materials are available under an Attribution-ShareAlike CC BY-SA 4.0 International license (https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/4.0/). Entities must give appropriate credit, provide a link to the license, and indicate if changes were made. Modifications of this license and derivatives need to be licensed under the same terms, but not other works in the compilation or collection. You may do so in any reasonable manner, but not in any way that suggests the licensor endorses you or your use. If you remix, transform, or build upon the material, you must distribute your contributions under the same license as the original. Entities may not apply legal terms or technological measures that legally restrict others from doing anything the license permits.

Machine-readable artifacts

The machine-readable files associated with the Specification, including Excel presentations, XSD schemas, JSON schemas, and OpenAPI specifications, are all licensed under the Apache 2.0 license.  Developers can look here for guidance on using the license: Using the Apache license.   The Apache 2.0 License is permissive. It allows you to use, modify, and distribute the licensed software, including creating derivative works, without requiring those derivative works to be licensed under the same terms. You can release the modified parts of the code under any license you prefer.

Global Education Security Standard (GESS): Disclaimer

The Global Education Security Standard (“GESS”) – https://sdpc.a4l.org/gess/ – is an identified set of security controls taken from relevant standards and legislation intended to be employed by marketplace providers in the Educational Technology field.. Adherence to the usage conditions outlined in the GESS does not guarantee information security and user safety while using the online service. Users should always exercise caution when using online services and contact their local support team for assistance if required.

THE GLOBAL EDUCATION SECURITY STANDARD IS PROVIDED “AS IS.” A4L MAKES NO WARRANTY OF ANY KIND, EXPRESS, IMPLIED, IN FACT OR ARISING BY OPERATION OF LAW, INCLUDING, WITHOUT LIMITATION, THE IMPLIED WARRANTY OF MERCHANTABILITY, FITNESS FOR A PARTICULAR PURPOSE, NON-INFRINGEMENT AND DATA ACCURACY. Standard Student Data Privacy: Notice & Disclaimer

Access 4 Learning (“A4L”) and its associated Student Data Privacy Consortium (“SDPC”) have sponsored the Standard/Modified Student Data Privacy Agreement (“Agreement”), also referred to as the National Data Privacy Agreement. SDPC and its members have endeavored to produce an Agreement that aligns with the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (“FERPA”) and certain state laws. However, neither A4L nor SDPC guarantee that the Agreement addresses compliance with all applicable laws. 

Users assume all risks arising from using the Agreement and by logging in to the SDPC Resource Registry or other A4L web sites, accept the terms and conditions of the A4L Terms of Use and Privacy Policy, which may be reviewed here.

Users of the Agreement are advised to consult with their representative state associations or local counsel if they have any questions about the Agreement.

SDPC Resource Registry: Notice & Disclaimer

Access for Learning (“A4L”) and its associated Student Data Privacy Consortium (SDPC”) have created and maintain a Registry of executed agreements using the Standard Student Data Privacy Agreement (“Agreement”) A4L and SDPC have taken reasonable efforts to maintain  efforts to maintain the integrity of the Registry and to produce a template agreement for use by its members.

However, neither A4L or SDPC warrant that: (1) the Registry is error free, (2) that the stored agreements comply with every applicable state law;  or (3) that the products and services subject to the Agreement are appropriate for the needs of a particular school district. Users assume all risks arising from use of the Registry and the use of the stored agreements. By logging in, User accepts the A4L Terms of Use and Privacy Policy, which may be accessed here.

If a district has questions about an Agreement, it should consult with it’s representative state association or local counsel.
